QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF SEA LEVEL DATA by the UH SEA LEVEL CENTER/NATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHIC DATA CENTER JOINT ARCHIVE FOR SEA LEVEL updated: 24 Oct 2019 Station : Broome Latitude: 18 00.1S Country : Australia Longitude: 122 13.1E JASL # : 166A Time Meridian: 120E (GMT + 8 hr) GLOSS # : 040 Originator #: ID071013 NODC #: 31128201 Contributor : National Tidal Centre, Bureau of Meteorology PO Box 421 Kent Town SA 5071 South Australia AUSTRALIA Originator : same; Australian Baseline Sea Level Monitoring Project Original Data: LS: analog, SL,TAC: digital Instrmnt Type: (1982-11/1991) Leupold & Stevens (LS) float/well (11/1991-22/Sep/2009) Aquatrak acoustic gauge, Sutron Logger (SL) 23/Sep/2009- acoustic gauge Telmet T320 Aquatrak Controller (TAC); Digitzd Intvl: LS: spot hourly TAC: Weighted average of 4, 1-minute readings; 1-minute reading is average of 60, 1-sec samples SL: used 6-minute samples average of 181, 1-second samples. Present Data : Hourly, daily, and monthly values obtained by: Hourly : filter with a cut-off of 2 hours Daily : 119-point convolution filter (Bloomfield, 1976) centered on noon applied to the hourly data with respective periods of the 95, 50, and 5% amplitude points at 124.0, 60.2, and 40.2 hours Monthly: Simple average of all daily values; calculated if 7 or fewer days are missing Span of data : 12 Jul 1986 - 31 Dec 2018 Gaps > 1 mon : 30 Sep 1987 - 31 Dec 1988;31 Dec 1989 - 26 Aug 1991 Time Refernce: GMT (hours 00-23) Space-filler Flag :-9999 Units : millimeters Missing Data Flag : 9999 Existing : Yes Operational : Yes Sat. Trans. : No Distribution : 1986-2018 Refernce Levl: The sea level heights are referred to the zero point assigned to the tide staff. Bench mark information is available upon request from the contributors. The tide gauge benchmark is an A.P.W.D bronze plaque stamped 'TIDAL BM' set in the concrete deck of the jetty above the northern end of the boat landing. The official datum for Broome is 13.397m below this plaque. Datum changed to LAT 04:00 UTC 9-Sep-2010. Data prior reprocessed by adding 860mm. Vertical Reference Frame: LAT (m) TGBM Name/Number: B186 SEAFRAME sensor benchmark TGBM Elevation relative to the vertical reference: 8.926m Australian Height Datum (AHD) or 14.248 LAT To fit the JASL format, 2000 mm were subtracted from the original data. Comment : The residuals (observed data minus predicted tides) are very noisy, probably due to shallow water and complex coastal geometry effects that are not resolved by the harmonic analysis. Otherwise, the daily and monthly values are reasonable and do not reveal any obvious reference level shifts. Pressure sensor data used for 30/12/95 and on 24/03/96. The large fluctuation in the residuals on 19 Sep 2000 was caused by a tropical cyclone. SPECIAL NOTE TO USERS OF NAT.
